Minimax-regret treatment choice with missing outcome data
نویسنده
چکیده
I use the minimax-regret criterion to study choice between two treatments when some outcomes in the study population are unobservable and the distribution of missing data is unknown. I first assume that observable features of the study population are known and derive the treatment rule that minimizes maximum regret over all possible distributions of missing data. When no treatment is dominant, this rule allocates positive fractions of persons to both treatments. I then assume that the data are a random sample of the study population and show that in some instances, treatment rules that estimate certain point-identified population means by sample averages are finite-sample minimax regret. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. Minimax Regret Treatment Choice with Finite Samples and Missing Outcome Data
This paper uses the minimax regret criterion to analyze choice between two treatments when one has observed a finite sample that is plagued by missing data. The analysis is entirely in terms of exact finite sample regret, as opposed to asymptotic approximations or finite sample bounds. It thus extends Manski (2007), who largely abstracts from finite sample problems, as well as Stoye (2006a), wh...
متن کاملMinimax Regret Treatment Choice with Limited Validity of Experiments or with Covariates
This paper continues the investigation of minimax regret treatment choice initiated by Manski (2004). Consider a decision maker who must assign treatment to future subjects after observing outcomes experienced in a finite sample. A certain scoring rule is known to achieve minimax regret in numerous variants of this decision problem. I investigate the sensitivity of these findings to perturbatio...
متن کاملStatistical Treatment Choice Based on Asymmetric Minimax Regret Criteria
This paper studies the problem of treatment choice between a status quo treatment with a known outcome distribution and an innovation whose outcomes are observed only in a representative finite sample. I evaluate statistical decision rules, which are functions that map sample outcomes into the planner’s treatment choice for the population, based on regret, which is the expected welfare loss due...
متن کاملRobustness in portfolio optimization based on minimax regret approach
Portfolio optimization is one of the most important issues for effective and economic investment. There is plenty of research in the literature addressing this issue. Most of these pieces of research attempt to make the Markowitz’s primary portfolio selection model more realistic or seek to solve the model for obtaining fairly optimum portfolios. An efficient frontier in the ...
متن کاملEfficient Policy Learning
We consider the problem of using observational data to learn treatment assignment policies that satisfy certain constraints specified by a practitioner, such as budget, fairness, or functional form constraints. This problem has previously been studied in economics, statistics, and computer science, and several regret-consistent methods have been proposed. However, several key analytical compone...
